Budapest’s ruin bars are eclectic, bohemian pubs housed in abandoned pre-war buildings, primarily in the 7th District (Jewish Quarter). Iconic spots include Szimpla Kert (the pioneer), Instant-Fogas (a massive multi-room complex), and Mazel Tov (an upscale cultural venue), featuring quirky décor, mismatched furniture, and vibrant nightlife.

We were lucky that our tour guide knows his way around and knows people. The Ruin Bars don’t open until late afternoon, but we were able to get in as part of our morning street art tour.

Entrance to the bars.

Can’t resist a pose on this wall – so 70’s.

Too many artworks to appreciate.

He has to have his own solo.

The ruin bars are not for everyone, but we found them unique.

Quirky.

Eccentric.

Distinctive.
