There is never assurance when one wanders in an unfamiliar territory. This particular Saturday, we decided to check out Kawartha North, particularly the Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park. The place looked very enticing and beautiful judging from the Google photos.

We were disappointed though. The park itself could not be accessed unless you have a boat that can transport you there. There was not even a proper parking area for ordinary wanderers like us who just wanted to be near the lake and have lunch. All access was a marina for boat launch. The Ontario Parks website did say there was limited parking but it did not say, we needed a boat. I guess we did not do our homework well.

All was not lost though, we bought lunch and enjoyed it at the Apsley library grounds. The place was clean and the breeze was cool. We then proceeded to the Marble Rapids Falls which was nearby. This was a small waterfalls with no designated place to park and the only way to view the falls was at the bridge.

Next, we went for Plan B which was to hike in any Conservation Area nearby. Found McGeachie Conservation Area in Bancroft. We hiked for around 30 minutes just following the blue trail. It was a good walk but since it was hot and humid, all flying insects seemed to hover us. There was nobody else hiking. The area holds promise of a colorful fall and a better hike. For this Saturday, we were not just “motivated” to go on, specially that I perceived not much stimulants in our walk.

Plan C was the Gut Conservation Area. We drove 12 kms of gravel road searching for the entrance. Finally found the marker but then beside it was also the sign “Private Area, Use at Your Own Risk”. We did not dare park nor enter.

We were dismayed but looked at the positive. Now we know that Kawartha Highlands is not a provincial park for us and that the Conservation Areas around Kawartha North cannot be relied based on Google photos. We do agree that some roads would be scenic come September- October. Are we coming back to the area? Too bad, but most likely not.

A few snapshots of interesting things we found while traversing the country roads between the areas. A proof we did visit Kawartha North.
