The Cliff Walk along the eastern shore of Newport, RI is a popular public access walk that combines the natural beauty of the Newport shoreline with the architectural history of Newport’s gilded age. The walk runs 3.5 miles and about two-thirds of the walk is in easy walking condition.

We dared take the walk although not taking the full length as it was getting dark and it was a very chilly evening. Nevertheless, we still got a glimpse the trail.

There are stops along the way and you can go as low as you want, as long as the tide is lower than you. This is known as the Forty Steps.

Must be different kinds of rocks here!

While on the trail you can pass by some of the Mansions (Rosecliff, The Breakers, Marble House) but there is no access.

The Cliff Walk was started in 1880 and the estate owners spent the next 50 years improving the walk (until 1929). In 1975 it was designated as a National Recreation Trail, the first in New England.
