Jamestown is located in the island of Conanicut, part of Rhode Island. For an island as small as Conanicut (1 mile wide and 9 miles long), we did a lot of things on our first full day.

Sunday mass at St. Mark’s Catholic Church. Notice the stained glass window on the right with a lighthouse.

Jamestown’s main street is Conanicus Avenue, which is a short street with the town hall, the churches, a few restaurants, the fire department and other basic shops. The street leads to the harbour.

We wanted to see the Conanicut Lighthouse but gave up after realizing it is no longer open to the public. Instead of the lighthouse, we however found the Jamestown Windmill.  This 30-foot high smock windmill was built in 1787 to grind corn. The area was not open for the season but we still managed to take a few photos.

At dusk we returned to Jamestown and just enjoyed the main street. Found these well lighted firetrucks.

The view of the harbour at sundown was so calming.

“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” ~ John F. Kennedy
