Today was a sunny day. The plan was to “review” the Kancamagus Hiway and just go from there. Not even 30 minutes in our leisurely drive we already had to stop at the Sugar Hill overlook.
A little bit more driving and we stopped at the Hancock Overlook. All along Kancamagus Hiway are several scenic overlooks that are all worth stopping by. No matter how many photos we have taken each stop deserves its own.
Third stop was the Village of Loon Mountain Resort where a gondola was available to take us to the summit of Loon Mountain. This was not a scheduled activity but with weather this nice we could not resist. The gondola ride took us to elevation 2,750 ft (Loon Mt.’s elevation is 3,065 ft). At the summit was Summit Cafe, a viewing deck and some trails. Spent most of the afternoon chilling at the summit.
After the Loon Mountain, we decided to go to Lincoln to look for some covered bridges. However blame it on the picturesque biway, we ended up at the Beaver Pond Scenic stop. ‘Twas another “no regret” stop as the view was amazing. A few photos then we headed to Bath.
Located the Bath-Haverville covered bridge. Constructed in 1827, it is the oldest covered bridge in New Hampshire. The bridge spans the Ammonossouc River and connects the 2 towns of Bath and Haverville. The Bath-Haverville bridge has a span of 256 ft. and is open to foot traffic only.
While in Bath we also found the Bath covered bridge. This bridge is also one of the oldest surviving covered bridges in New Hampshire, built in 1832. It is still open to traffic. Beside the bridge was a cute general store which prides itself as America’s Oldest General Store.
**Note – The town of Bath is no longer inside the White Mountain National Forest.
Another lovely autumn day in New Hampshire.
