With the low Canadian and US dollar exchange rate – we were “kind of” forced to explore Ontario for our March get-way. Around 2.5 hours drive from Toronto via Hiway 35 is Haliburton. Part of cottage country and almost towards Algonquin Park the place is surrounded by lakes of various sizes.

Right in front of Haliburton Heights where we stayed is Lake Kashagawigamog – one of the largest lakes in the Haliburton area. Its name is derived from the Native word for “long and winding waters.” Sixteen km long and about one km wide – all frozen as of now.

The town of Haliburton is composed of Highland Street where the post office, a pharmacy, restaurants and some shops are located. Very quiet when we were there but surely must be busy during summer and fall.

Photo below taken in front of Castle Antiques – a must visit shop just to browse at things old and beautiful. The prices were reasonable though and the items were indeed unique. I almost caved in for a 3 tier high tea serving tray.

As in any other place we visit – there is always the “obligatory” food place to try out. This time, we tried Baked and Battered as suggested by the sales clerk in one of the shops.

We enjoyed our warm clam chowder, fried halibut with salad and coffee by the window overlooking Head Lake.

One thing worth coming back in Haliburton are the sunsets. They were magical in a frozen lake.
