We were not prepared for Ile d’Orleans. For a “scheduled” island trip of 3 hours, we spent one day in this beautiful island.

Île d’Orléans (translated in English as Island of Orleans) is located in the Saint Lawrence River about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) east of downtown Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. The island was one of the first parts of the province to be colonized by the French, and a large percentage of French Canadians can trace ancestry to early residents of the island. The island has been described as the “microcosm of traditional Quebec and as the birthplace of francophones in North America.”

The welcome. Long stretches of this type of scenic roads.

Then we came upon an apple farm whose tender gave us an impromtu cider tasting. While grapes are to wine, apples are to cider. We had a taste of before dinner, after dinner, alcoholic, non-alcoholic drinks. As a finale we had the ice cider plain and then ice cider mixed with sparkling juice. What a surprise treat! We ended up buying a few bottles.

Down the road we turned right and came to rue Horatio Walker. From this riverside street we can view Quebec city and even Montmorency Falls.

All this in Sainte-Petronile. Just one of the 8 small towns of the I’le d’ Orleans.
