This road trip to Georgia brought a few surprises. Getting to know a few waterfalls in this northern part of Georgia was not a planned activity at all. However, upon arriving at the resort, we discovered a few waterfalls are within driving distance. When opportunity presents itself, who are we to say no?

Toccoa Falls inside the Toccoa Falls College. At 186 feet high, Toccoa Falls is one of the tallest (taller than Niagara Falls) freefalling waterfalls east of the Mississippi.

This is not a falls, but this was the road leading to the falls. A narrow winding off-trail scramble or bushwhack from Pumping Station Road. We even had to ask the operator of the grass cutter where the falls was.

This is the falls. Or what we saw from the road. We could hear the thunderous sound of water though but it was a bit far from us. They call it the Filmy Fern Falls.

In the town of Tallulah Falls Lake, we found the L’Eau d’or Falls, Tempesta Falls and Oceania Falls. Trivia : Across the Tallulah Gorge where the Tallulah River flows is where German daredevil Karl Wallenda did his high wire walk in 1970. The walk spanned approximately 1,000 feet across and 750 feet above the ground and was completed in 18 minutes.

Nest stop was Minnehaha Falls at Rabun County. This waterfall tumbles approximately 100 feet falling and shoaling. There was a short hike to see this beauty, but once we found it, we stayed long to enjoy the cool breeze, the sound of the water falling and just be with nature. We were lucky we had the waterfall all to ourselves on this afternoon.

Last but not least is Anna Ruby Falls near Alpine Helen. Anna Ruby is a pair of beautiful waterfalls, cascading in tandem through a beautiful slice of North Georgia forest. The twin waterfalls spill from a towering cliff in wispy white tendrils before splashing and pooling over mossy boulders. Simply beautiful and mesmerizing.

We wished we had known and seen the many other waterfalls in the area but I guess that will be for another visit. Photos don’t give justice to how breathtaking these waterfalls were. Cameras can only capture as much.
